Rice cookers are a wonderful addition to any household but when there are problems sometimes users may want to return them or just put them in the closet. Solutions are out there they just have to be researched. There are many problems that can occur with rice cookers but there is also a solution for everything.
There are common problems like: confusing operation instructions, burnt rice at the bottom, conversion charts, no instructions for high altitude cooking, undercooked rice, lost utensils, smelly rice, hard, chewy rice, mushy rice, wet rice, a lost lid or a lost manual. For curing the burnt rice problem, you can run cold water underneath the bottom of the pot and salvage whatever rice that is possible. For things like instructions and manuals the internet is a great place to locate any manual on the market today. For smelly rice a solution, maybe the rice was from a bad batch and maybe the user should start over with a new batch. With things like hard rice or soft rice, it all comes down to either too much water or not enough water. The general rule with rice is to add 1 cup of rice and 1.5 to 2 cups of water and adjust it as needed.
When rice is too mushy it may be best to start over, but for other things like hard rice or undercooked rice just adding a little more water may solve the problem. When rice is cooked but wet the solution can be to remove the pot cover and heat the rice for a short period of time to allow for the heat to absorb the water.
Summary
The first step to perfect rice is to have the right cookware and the right measuring cups and utensils. The next step is to use your best judgment. If the water content doesn’t seem to be enough additional water in small amounts can always be added. With any other problem there is always the internet where manuals, instructions recipes and solutions to everyday problems with rice cookers can be found.
